Role and responsibilities of an Emergency First Aider.

Ø Ways to minimise the risk of infection

Ø Importance of consent before providing treatment

Ø Accident form

Ø List the contents of a first aid kit

Ø Scene survey


Patient Assessment

Ø State the principles of conducting a ‘scene survey’

Ø Types of dangers a first aider could face

Ø Conduct a ‘primary survey’ of a casualty

Ø Identify when to call the emergency services


The unconscious casualty

Ø The principles of assessing a casualty’s level of consciousness

Ø Open a casualty’s airway using the ‘head tilt, chin lift’ method

Ø How to check if a casualty is breathing

Ø Demonstrate how to place an unconscious casualty in the recovery position

Ø Managing a casualty who is having a seizure


Resuscitation

Ø Principles of the ‘chain of survival’

Ø Identify when to perform CPR

Ø Demonstrate how to administer CPR

Ø Demonstrate how to use an AED


The choking casualty

Ø Identify the two types of choking

Ø Demonstrate how to administer first aid to a casualty who is choking


Bleeding, wound and trauma management

Ø Identify the different types of external bleeding

Ø Haemorrhagic bleeding management

Ø Use of CAT, haemostatic dressings

Ø Wound packing

Ø Pressure bandages as Israeli pressure bandage

Ø Improvised pressure bandages and TQ

Ø Demonstrate how to administer first aid to a casualty who is bleeding

Ø First aid for:

· Chest(broken ribs, flail chest, sucking chest wound)

· Abdominal (internal bleeding, evisceration),

· Major burns (thermal, chemical etc)

· Use of chest seal

Ø Identify a fracture, dislocation, sprain and strain

Ø First aid to a casualty with a fracture and dislocation including use of splints such as sam splint



Shock management

Ø Managing a casualty who is in shock



Circulatory issues

Ø First aid procedures for stroke

Ø First aid treatment for heart attacks and angina


Suspected head and spinal injuries

Ø Identify the different types of head injury including treatment

Ø Actions needed to be taken with a suspected spinal injury.



Poisoning

Ø Treatment for sudden poisoning


Anaphylaxis

Ø Identify common triggers for anaphylaxis

Ø Recognise the signs and symptoms of anaphylaxis including emergency treatment

Ø Use of epipen


Environmental emergencies


Ø Identify the signs and symptoms for: sun stroke, sun burn, heat exhaustion

Ø Carry out first aid treatment for the above

Ø Identify the signs and symptoms for hypothermia and cold related injuries
